Watersheds Gallery The force of water has shaped our planet's surface for billions of years and created some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes. Watersheds provide us with the essentials of life, helping to water our crops, nurture our fish, and power our cities. This painting represents an imagined scene from the aftermath of one of the ancient Lake Missoula Floods. They violently scoured thousands of square miles of eastern Washington state over 10,000 years ago. The floods carved canyons, coulees and pothole lakes in the volcanic basalt that covers much of the region. The dramatic land forms that resulted make for great art and photographic inspiration, as well as excellent destinations for travelers. I originally painted the scene with acrylic, then to enhance the richness of color in the landscape, I accented the work with oil pastels. This layer allowed me to add detail and control color intensity as necessary. A large region of eastern Washington state is known as the Channeled Scablands.
