Artist Statement

I draw from nature to explore my connection to the natural world through art.  There is fascinating subject matter all around in the "civilized" world, but I find myself returning repeatedly to nature and its infinite forms for many of my themes and inspirations. I've logged many miles collecting sensations and inspirations with my camera and an acute visual memory, backpacking through the mountains and canyons of the west. Whether I'm illustrating the intricate patterns of a feather, or painting a panoramic landscape, creating art from nature is a way to call attention to the remarkable world that surrounds us, and from which we all originated.

My exploratory approach to art is evident in the textural mixed media series I call Elemental Works, that incorporate contorted roots, jagged shells, and other organic objects that appear to grow from, or into my work surfaces. The natural shapes and forms in many of my artworks form a common thread from one series to another, and at times, conjure the bizarre world of a Hieronymus Bosch painting - with a vision that speaks to the failings of mankind and the portrayal of a type of manmade purgatory on earth.

Behind my creative process is a dynamic balancing act between the conscious and subconscious, the spontaneous and the deliberate, the wild and the civilized. My many experiences as a wilderness traveler - contrasted with living in modern urban society, have had a profound influence on my creative work, and have had a powerful impact on the way I look at life. My work reflects a concern for our singular world, and is a natural response to both the unheralded beauty of our planet, and the dishearteningly adverse changes to it that we are now witnessing. Even art cannot reconcile the two.
